The movement of freight is integral to the regional economy and is changing rapidly with ever-increasing home deliveries, new technologies that affect manufacturing processes, and more.

COMPASS considers freight needs as one part of planning for a complete transportation network. This planning supports the safe and efficient movement of freight vehicles and provides for safe interactions between freight vehicles and other users of the transportation system.

The COMPASS Freight Advisory Workgroup assists COMPASS in identifying freight needs and deficiencies and projects to address those needs for inclusion in the regional long-range transportation plan, Communities in Motion. These projects also support  freight-related performance measures; progress toward meeting identified targets is reported in COMPASS’ Change in Motion scorecard.

Freight studies provide an in-depth understanding of the impact of freight in the region and serve as the foundation for COMPASS’ freight planning.
