Carbon Reduction Strategy
Vehicle emissions contribute significantly to carbon and other air pollutants throughout the US. The federal Carbon Reduction Program was created to address this impact by funding transportation projects that decrease roadway emissions.
COMPASS developed a Carbon Reduction Strategy and interactive scoring tool to identify and help prioritize projects that reduce overall vehicle emissions and are eligible for Carbon Reduction Program funding. The strategy and prioritization tool will be used by COMPASS and its member agencies as part of the prioritization processes for projects in both the regional long-range transportation plan and transportation improvement program.
The types of projects that help meet program goals and are eligible for this funding include:
- Technologies and strategies that reduce vehicle emissions.
- Investments in public and active transportation modes to reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles.
- Deployment of electric, hydrogen, and other zero-emission vehicles and fueling infrastructure.
- Intelligent Transportation Systems and traffic management technologies that reduce idling and enhance travel efficiency.
